TIMEOUT – Think! Contemporary is a museum-based school programme that advocates learning through contemporary art. Based on Singapore Art Museum’s (SAM) permanent exhibition in the Learning Gallery, the programme advocates the use of artworks in a museum as a learning tool not just for the subject of Art, but for other subjects like Social Studies and English. It is an interdisciplinary museum-based curriculum innovation. Its objectives are to stimulate creativity, develop 21cc and deepen pupils’ appreciation for visual art and sense of pride in Singapore’s cultural heritage.

Museum lessons were conducted by both P4 Art and English teachers where the observations about the artworks were segued into discussions. Drawing on SAM’s contemporary art collection, students were engaged in an exploration of issues connected to the themes of immigration and identity; heritage - memories and places; nationhood and globalisation. Post-museum visit activities included students’ involvement in creative writing tasks and artworks in response to the artworks/artists studied at SAM. Art making tasks revolving around forming an elegant problem have been designed to develop students’ critical thinking and personal voices that would make their art-making experience a meaningful and satisfying one.
